Maintaining a healthy lifestyle as a full-time student is definitely not easy, but it’s not impossible either. With enough determination and proper time management, one can excel in school and keep a healthy and balanced lifestyle.
You see, there are lots of ways to manage your free time to maintain a healthy lifestyle… even if you feel like you’re already drowning in school responsibilities.
So, as our way of helping struggling students out there, we compiled a few tips that you can follow to keep a balanced and healthy lifestyle while being active in school.
1. Eat Healthy
Eating healthy is probably the best tip we can give to every busy student out there. Even if you can’t find the time to squeeze in a quick workout before going to school, eating the right food with the proper portions is already a huge step towards a healthy lifestyle.
We also recommend preparing your own breakfast and lunch before going to school, so you’re not forced to eat unhealthy, greasy cafeteria food. Making your own food also helps you add variety to your everyday meals.
It’s also better to bring healthy snacks such as fruits to school, instead of a pack of Cheetos. The latter won’t be good for your diet.
Essentially, do your best to avoid junk food and fast food. Yes, we know they’re tempting because they’re cheap and convenient, but self control is the key.
Besides, once you get better at preparing healthy food, you’ll be surprised how quick and easy it is to make — and by how delicious it is!
2. Drink Plenty of Water
By now, you should already know the benefits of drinking water. It keeps us hydrated, regulates body temperature, boosts performance during exercise, and more importantly, keeps our skin clear.
In fact, the state of your skin is often a good indicator of whether or not you’re drinking enough water. According to the experts at Dermatologist Singapore, a fair number of people with poor skin turn out to be mildly dehydrated.
Fortunately, a good diet and higher water intake can solve that. Water is also generally easy to access here, so you can easily raise your water intake.
In line with this, we also recommend limiting your intake of caffeinated and sugary beverages. If you get thirsty, plain water is still your best option.
3. Have a Quick Workout
If your class doesn’t start until late afternoon, why not squeeze in a short workout before preparing? It may seem hard at first because there isn’t a lot of free time, but a 30-minute run and stretching around the campus is usually enough.
What about using a gym? Well, enrolling into a gym isn’t the most practical advice because it’s expensive. So, take advantage of your school gym as much as possible.
And if these still don’t work out for you, then we suggest walking to and from class. You might cover a good distance that way without realizing it!
4. Get Some Sleep
We can’t stress how important it is to have a complete 8-hour sleep every day, especially for students. But we all know that this is virtually impossible when there are lots of requirements to finish.
If you’re not doing anything in between classes, try to squeeze in a 30-minute nap. That should be enough to prepare for you what’s to come for the rest of the day.
5. Indulge Once in a While
There’s no way of escaping the stress of university life because it’s part of being a student. So, it’s up to you to find ways to relieve yourself of the stress caused by school. Just make sure that your ways of coping are healthy.
Some common ways of taking a break from school would be watching Netflix or scrolling through social media. However, too much exposure to bluescreen can cause serious damage to your eyesight — that’s an added strain to your health, which rather negates the point of living a healthy lifestyle, according to Singapore eye doctors.
In any case, moderation may be the key if you opt for such stress-relieving solutions. Still our point is that it’s important for students to have their own life outside university.
Immersing yourself too deeply into your studies can cause serious burnout — which negatively affects both your health and studies in the long run.
So, try to detach yourself from school every once in a while. Everyone needs a breather on occasion.
Anyway, that’s the end of our guide to how students can maintain a balanced and healthy lifestyle while dealing with school requirements. We hope that these tips will actually lead you to abandon unhealthy and toxic ways of coping with school and help you keep up your health while you study.
